Taj express to Agra

Old sign of the Taj Mahal, Agra, India

It is maybe the most recognizable monument in the world. If you try to draw it on a sheet of paper you do not need to be a genious, everybody will know what you wanted to represent. That is maybe why it is considered as one of the 7 world’s marvels. It has a so pure shape we cannot think it has been built by humans.
I think you got it, I am speaking about the famous and incredible Taj Mahal!

Door in front of the Taj Mahal, India

That is not possible to be aware of the architectural exploit before having seen it. After going through the ticket office, after paying 30 times more than Indians, after passing the security check, we finally arrive in front of a big red door and we cannot see the Taj Mahal. Then we wonder if we were right to come here and pay so much for a tourist sighseeing with so many people.

And we go through the door and the marvel appears. It is first like in a mirage, in the warm and dusty air. We first see the so familiar shape and we wonder if it is an apparition. After we go through the garden, ignoring the crowd because we are subjugated by the Taj Mahal. And then we see the details more precisely, the beautiful white marble and the beautiful incrustations of semi-precious stones.
It is a kind of magic and we do not regret the trip!

It is to be mentioned we made the trip from Delhi in the same day. We got up at 4:30am and took the “Taj Express” for Agra : 3 hours for 140km, not so bad!

Red Fort entrance, Agra, India

Agra is well-known for the Taj Mahal of course but there also wonderful monuments to see as the “Red Fort”. Recorded on the UNESCO world heritage list, this very construction had many ameliorations from the 11th century. It combines Hindu and Moghol architecture.

Shah Jahan, the man who ordered the construction of the Taj Mahal, had asked for the destruction of a part of the fort so that it is replaced by a palace of white rock. We can notice that at this time wealth could be mesured by the presence of water. Many fountains and pools can be found in the different rooms.

Our visit of Agra ended in a quite adventurous way because we had to find the romano-catholic cemetery to find the grave of Remi’s Maharadja ancestor!
